October 13 is a very important day for humanity, as World Fertilizer Day is celebrated and one of the essential inventions for agriculture and food is commemorated, the Haber-Bosch patent, which has made it possible to use the Nitrogen in the air to make ammonia, laying the foundation for the modern fertilizer industry and saving billions of people from famine.

Remember that although nitrogen is the majority component of air (78%), plants cannot capture it directly from it. This is the reason why it is necessary to provide it to plants through industrially obtained fertilizers.

It is important to note that mineral fertilizers are vital for plants, since they complement the nutrients in the soil, allowing the nutritional needs of crops to be met. In addition, fertilizers significantly increase crop yields, and contribute to global food security. We must remember the great benefit they have for the planet, since without them agriculture would need an additional 1,100 million hectares of virgin land to feed the world's population.

Every October 13, companies and organizations in the sector come together around the world to celebrate this day and to celebrate the achievements that have been obtained thanks to the use of fertilizers. Through various events organized worldwide, the aim is to make society aware of the importance of discovering the manufacturing process of mineral fertilizers and the efforts made by companies in the sector to promote their rational application.

The National Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers (ANFFE), which represents the main fertilizer producers operating in Spain, has once again joined the European Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers, Fertilizers Europe, in this great celebration, which has drawn up a graphic material which highlights, among others, that:

•European fertilizer manufacturers provide farmers with high-quality products, ensuring optimal yields and a more sustainable environment. In addition, they help farmers to develop sustainable agricultural practices.

•The fertilizer sector creates 75,800 highly skilled jobs in Europe.

•European fertilizer manufacturers are leaders in the circular economy, transforming 10 million tonnes of ammonium sulfate and sulfur into fertilizers every year.

Last year, the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic once again put food security high on the global agenda. Workers in the agri-food chain played a key role in continuing to ensure that food is produced and reaches the tables of all households. For this reason, from the fertilizer sector we dedicate the #FoodHeroes campaign to them, paying tribute to their efforts to continue to grow and provide nutritious and healthy food for everyone.
